Our bent is getting very very tired... The buzz about the club is that tiff is on the way as soon as the weather permits... November??

I think tifdwarf at Auburn will be a mistake. There was two feet of shade at the northern end of the green on Monday. The shade problem in the middle of winter will be a killer. The clubhouse is too close to the green for couch to be a sensible option. There'll always be poor grass cover on the northern ditch area.
At RUBC there was only six inches of shade on the green in the middle of winter, and that was enough to affect the tif cover.
But I'm not a trained turf professional, only a farm boy with some knowledge of grass. ;) ;) ;)

Williamstown opened their new Tiff green yesterday(Wed March 24) 12 weeks after sprigging. Finished off running over 14sec. Well done to Zitters and Duck for a great effort.
I know of many more new tiff greens around Melb that have come up a treat which is great for bowls.

Swinger cut both greens today (the one year old and the brand new one) which were both laser levelled on 15th March. Will post photos soon, but to say they are looking awesome is an understatement. Well done Nathan :get outa here: :get outa here:

Well he did come from a state that has usually had very good tift greens Wellsy.

I hope as it sounds that all these clubs going to tift works out as i now am keener to come to Darebin than i ever have been before after this years Shepparton efforts as well.
So hoping as i am hearing that this will transform this place from the previous bad name it has had.

Thanks for that insight Commie...

You are right. The club house (northern) end of our green only gets full sun in the summer and probably 6 foot or more shade mid winter. So should we stick with bent?? The green is buggared so we need to bring it back to life....

Is it possible to put in a tiff and sow the last 2 foot with bent off season? might not look the best but who cares only 2 foot or would not work?

You know painkill I have often queitly wondered that myself. I suppose it would come down to the greenkeeper's will as to whether he would look after the members that well...on that note I know a greenie who's club has shouted him a Xmas drink once in 14 years! Why would you bust your arse for people who obviously have no regard for the EXTRA work every greenie is stuck with doing outside their arrangements...

Sunbury had the same problem with the tif on the south side of the clubhouse. Solved the problem by giving up trying to grow couch in the shade. Shorten the green and make the footpath wider.

Yes it would work, you can have a blend of tiff and bent in the shaded area.

But i would not do it because it would look shithouse for the majority of the season.

The green needs to be an even uniform cover, the visual impact is important.

Would the bent or the tift actually try and outcompete the other, leading to one becoming infested with the other?
I'll never be a good example so I might as well be a great warning !!

I dont agree on that personally. It might not look that appealing having 2 foot of bent on the ends but Il'd rather that then dirt. Many greens ive seen, their green keepers would love to have the green covered in grass. Yes looks are important but so is having the green covered. In the last 2 foot does not effect the line of the bowl, maybe the odd bowl drawing to the ditch. In Summer tiff would try to spread though the bent and in winter the tiff would die off.

Werribee RSL #3 green looking a treat. Installed 13 Dec 09. Had an excellent strike. 100% cover with an unbelievable thick matting already. The green is still a little soft, but will improve for end of year pennant. Levels are pretty good for a new green and will no doubt improve with a dusting in December. One problem encountered. The bloody green keeper is whining about the amount of cutting he has to do. Another issue early on was couch fly. We had millions of them (especially in the ditches). Not to bad now. We've given them a good whack with couch fly 'killer'. So far, so good. I'm very happy with the results so far.
